The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has come into force in central London, with Birmingham and Leeds’ Clean Air Zones set to follow by January 2020, and cities such as Manchester and Sheffield also looking at ways to charge the most polluting vehicles entering their cities.
This is all good news for campaigners for cleaner air, with Transport for London (TfL) confident that it will reduce the number of the heaviest polluting vehicles using the zone, TfL estimates the initial scheme will lead to a reduction in toxic emissions from road transport by about 45% in two years. Poor air quality has been linked with childhood respiratory diseases such as asthma as well as thousands of premature deaths across the country every year.
Under the new scheme, vehicles that do not meet certain emissions standards will have to pay to enter the zones, the amount will vary depending on the vehicle size and levels of pollution caused. Those who fail to pay the charge will be issued with fines of £160.
Congestion charging and charging the most polluting of vehicles seems set to grow across the country as the government strives to reach legal targets set for air pollution across its major cities.
